Dream catchers are thought to have originated with the Ojibwa (Chippewa) Nation, they believed the dreamcatcher would protect a sleeper from negative dreams. The bad dreams would be caught inside the web and good dreams would filter through the center hole, sliding down the feathers to the dreamer. The movement of any of the feathers would indicate the passage of another beautiful dream. Bad dreams however were trapped in the web and would be burned away with the morning sun.

Many times the webs would be woven in eight directions from the center representing the eight legs of a spider. Some dreamcatchers are also woven with seven directions indicating the seven prophecies.
