The elk shoulder bone (scapula) is broad and flat, making it useful for scraping hides, digging, or as a primitive shovel. It was also traditionally used to help process hides and, in some cases, as a planting tool for crops like corn, beans, and squash. Each piece varies slightly in size and shape.
